TORONTO — The controversial British plan to block access to pornography websites unless Internet customers explicitly opt-in has been discussed in Canada but Internet service providers have thus far fought it off, according to the head of an industry group. Cameron also said he wants to make it illegal to possess violent pornography that portrays rape, and urged search engines to block queries for illegal content. ISPs did agree to working with the non-profit Canadian Centre for Child Protection in implementing Project Cleanfeed in , which blocks websites hosting child pornography. That partnership was easier to undertake because the content being blocked was illegal, said Michael Geist, a law professor at the University of Ottawa and the Canada Research Chair in Internet and e-commerce law. ISPs have resisted blocking porn websites by pointing out there are numerous free software applications that parents can install on their own computers to restrict access as they see fit.

ISPs have resisted blocking porn websites by pointing out there are numerous free software applications that parents can install on their own computers to restrict access as they see fit.

Geist agreed that parents should be better empowered to protect their kids rather than forcing ISPs to implement overreaching filters. To have the government essentially force this on the ISPs in a way that you have to … opt-in to be able to view perfectly legal content always raises questions around slippery slopes. So there are a whole number of parameters the industry has to consider. Signy Arnason, associate executive director of the Canadian Centre for Child Protection, said she welcomed the discussion around new methods to safeguard kids online.

At various times, the election seemed to be about climate change, abortion, infrastructure or Indigenous rights. But nothing cohered into a specific ballot question.

Scheer has been Conservative since high school; Singh may just be hipper than Trudeau; Bernier was in Harper's cabinet; and May wasn't born in Canada. This could get messy. Fortunately, the Westminster parliamentary system has a long track record of successfully sorting out messy election situations. Opt-in system for online porn has been discussed in Canada: industry group | National Post

The subject who is truly loyal to the Chief Magistrate will neither advise nor submit to arbitrary measures. Wholesomeness isn't a word that's usually associated with pornography, but that's how Kate Sinclaire describes what she does. Sinclaire says. Her product is inclusive, featuring body types and gender identities that aren't often found, or aren't treated with respect, in traditional pornography.

While Ms. Sinclaire says it's just the right thing to do, it's also good business. The Internet has led to a drastic increase in porn consumption, but creators haven't benefited, and it's been a struggle to figure out how to get people to pay for something they easily get for free. Getting paying customers isn't the only business challenge faced by small Canadian porn producers. There are only two payment processors who work with the porn industry and they charge higher fees.

Even simple bank transactions can take longer if the teller knows what industry her small business is in. In fact, it's his favourite part of being in the porn business. He's the owner and chief executive officer of Montreal-based porn producer AD4X. His films have featured a performer dressed up as Bonhomme Carnaval, while another referenced a controversial Montreal police officer. That one, Agent XXX, got him sued by the officer in question. The case was dismissed. He also organized a "sex marathon" in Gatineau that drew condemnation from the city's mayor.

De La Seine's products are decidedly within the mainstream. AD4X operates seven different websites, each with its own niche, and he says the movies he makes are less formulaic than those made by the big studios. He says DVD sales have dropped by 50 to 75 per cent over the past decade.

He's also investing in virtual reality. He recently launched a site that shows movies shot with degree cameras. Toronto porn producer Scott Rhodes, who started making home videos with his wife 15 years ago, says that with fewer people paying for porn, he's been forced to diversify.

Rhodes puts much of the blame on so-called "tube sites" — YouTube-like websites where anyone can upload porn videos. While those sites make money through advertising, none of that goes back to the creators. Despite the challenges, Mr. Rhodes says he has no plans of leaving the industry.
