  • The Flashing Blade is a French television serial made in the late s.

I've previously talked about The Singing Ringing Tree , which was one of those children's programming choices the BBC made to inject European culture, as it saw it, into young minds. But it wasn't the only one. Each summer as I was growing up they chose a couple of European serials which they cycled. Its proper title was Le Chevalier Tempete , and it was was a French TV production which, unusually for the period it was set in the s , had them fighting the Spanish and not the British.

The two main characters, Francois de Chevalier and his comedy sidekick servant Guillot were on a dangerous mission to lift the siege on the Castle of Casal, and save the beautiful Isabelle de Sospel along the way. It was badly dubbed, but had an interesting mixture of action, humour and romance.

Actually, when it was funny it was hilarious. The amusing side of it was further explored in the s when it was redubbed with a script written by Doctor Who mentor Russel T. Davies, utilising the many voices of Jon Culshaw. The end; or, to be accurate, the fact that I've never actually seen it. Each summer I'd watch it twice a week, until it got to the 11th episode, and then invariably I'd be forced to return to school before seeing the all important 12th.

And then one year I was ill, and didn't go back on time, so I was still at home for the final part of the story. I must have waited at least five years to see it, and so there was a degree of anticipation. I only discovered years later that the film stock the BBC had on the final episode had a fault, so they chose not to show it. In fact it was such a well-known fact that it wasn't actually dubbed, and the only versions of it are in French with subtitles.

After I'd given up they actually showed this version, forgetting the fault — which scuppers the final minutes — and then got abuse from those children that caught it and got disappointed yet again. Apparently those that tuned into a particular Ask Aspel did actually get to see the missing ending. These days those damaged by a TV serial that never concluded can obtain the DVD, and get some closure.

It was first broadcast in the UK on BBC children's television during the s, with several re-runs throughout the s. The British version of twelve 22 minutes episodes was created from the original four French minute episodes.

The fictional story is based upon historical events during the War of the Mantuan Succession — between France and Spain and its allies. Despite numerous attempts to scale the defences, the beleaguered garrison held out. The Savoy army was eventually defeated by a French relief force on 18 March The series revolves around the efforts of a dashing French spy to engineer the garrison's rescue. Francois, the Chevalier de Recci, and his servant Guillot are trapped in a besieged castle on the border between France and Spain.

When the Spanish elite hear of a possible truce between France and Spain, some of them do not want a truce because the capture of the castle has greater strategic importance.

They begin a bombardment in order to capture the French castle before any form of ceasefire agreement is signed. The garrison commander, General Thoiras, recruits Francois and Gullot to break through Spanish lines to get word of the attack to the French Army.

The pair, with their superior swordplay and horsemanship, embark on a daring mission evading capture, enemy spies and pursuing soldiers to deliver their message. The series ends with the Chevalier bringing news of the peace conference's decision to the Spanish Forces surrounding the castle.

Several cast members from The Flashing Blade appeared in similar serialised action productions for French children's TV. The Aeronauts was set in the present day and featured a couple of daring French Air Force Mirage fighter pilots. The final few minutes of the last episode were later shown on Michael Aspel 's "request a repeat" show Ask Aspel.

The theme song was "Fight" [1] by The Musketeers written by Alex Masters , which was issued on a Philips single in The scripts for the new comic soundtrack were written by the award-winning dramatist Russell T Davies.
