A number of companies built Model T—based railcars. The knowledge and skills needed by a factory worker were reduced to 84 areas. When introduced, the T used the building methods typical at the time, assembly by hand, and production was small.

The Ford Piquette Avenue Plant could not keep up with demand for the Model T, and only 11 cars were built there during the first full month of production. During this time the Model T production system transitioned into an iconic example of assembly line production; [17] in subsequent decades it would also come to be viewed as the classic example of the rigid, first-generation version of assembly line production, as opposed to flexible mass production.

As a result, Ford's cars came off the line in three-minute intervals, much faster than previous methods, reducing production time from The Model T was a great commercial success, and by the time Henry made his 10 millionth car, half of all cars in the world were Fords. It was so successful Ford did not purchase any advertising between and ; instead, the Model T became so famous, people considered it a norm. Henry Ford's ideological approach to Model T design was one of getting it right and then keeping it the same; he believed the Model T was all the car a person would, or could, ever need.

Design changes were not as few as the public perceived, but the idea of an unchanging model was kept intact. Model T engines continued to be produced until August 4, Racers and enthusiasts, forerunners of modern hot rodders, used the Model T's block to build popular and cheap racing engines, including Cragar , Navarro , and famously the Frontenacs "Fronty Fords" [51] of the Chevrolet brothers, among many others. The Model T employed some advanced technology, for example, its use of vanadium steel alloy.

Its durability was phenomenal, and some Model Ts and their parts are in running order over a century later. Although Henry Ford resisted some kinds of change, he always championed the advancement of materials engineering, and often mechanical engineering and industrial engineering. In , Ford built a final batch of six Model Ts as part of their centenary celebrations. These cars were assembled from remaining new components and other parts produced from the original drawings. The last of the six was used for publicity purposes in the UK.

Although Ford no longer manufactures parts for the Model T, many parts are still manufactured through private companies as replicas to service the thousands of Model Ts still in operation today. This marked the famous automobile's official last day of production at the main factory.

The moving assembly line system, which started on October 7, , allowed Ford to sell his cars at a price lower than his competitors. Other factors affected the price such as material costs and design changes. The figures below are US production numbers compiled by R. Houston, Ford Production Department, August 3, The figures between and are for Ford's fiscal year.

From to , the fiscal year was from October 1 to September 30 the following calendar year with the year number being the year in which it ended. For the fiscal year, the year was October 1, , through July 31, Starting in August , and through the end of the Model T era, the fiscal year was August 1 through July Beginning with January , the figures are for the calendar year.

Henry Ford used wood scraps from the production of Model Ts to make charcoal briquettes. Originally named Ford Charcoal, the name was changed to Kingsford Charcoal after the Iron Mountain Ford Plant closed in and the Kingsford Chemical Company was formed and continued the wood distillation process. Kingsford, Ford's cousin by marriage, brokered the selection of the new sawmill and wood distillation plant site.

Scrap wood was distilled at the Iron Mountain plant for its wood chemicals, with the end by product being lump charcoal. This lump charcoal was modified and pressed into briquettes and mass marketed by Ford. The Ford Model T was the first automobile built by various countries simultaneously, since they were being produced in Walkerville , Canada, and in Trafford Park , Greater Manchester, England, starting in and were later assembled in Germany , Argentina , [60] France, Spain, Denmark , Norway , Belgium , Brazil , Mexico , and Japan, as well as several locations throughout the US.

The Aeroford was an English automobile manufactured in Bayswater , London, from to It was a Model T with distinct hood and grille to make it appear to be a totally different design, what later would have been called badge engineering. Ford created a massive publicity machine in Detroit to ensure every newspaper carried stories and advertisements about the new product. Ford's network of local dealers made the car ubiquitous in virtually every city in North America. A large part of the success of Ford's Model T stems from the innovative strategy which introduced a large network of sales hubs making it easy to purchase the car.

Ford was always eager to sell to farmers, who looked on the vehicle as a commercial device to help their business. Today, four main clubs exist to support the preservation and restoration of these cars: the Model T Ford Club International, [63] the Model T Ford Club of America [64] and the combined clubs of Australia. With many chapters of clubs around the world, the Model T Ford Club of Victoria [65] has a membership with a considerable number of uniquely Australian cars.

Many steel Model T parts are still manufactured today, and even fiberglass replicas of their distinctive bodies are produced, which are popular for T-bucket style hot rods as immortalized in the Jan and Dean surf music song "Bucket T", which was later recorded by The Who. I've bought, traded and sold stuff for well over 45 years now and never had a running T Speedster. I treated myself to a Buffalo front hub last week on "That Auction Site" a nice mate to the one I bought in the Spring of I really should have keep the Buffalo wheeled Speedster I sold in , but I needed money to finish the house.

The single arm Hartford shocks will get attached somehow. Sandblast and prime is the next step, check the hubs to be sure they spin true. Once that is done I'll move onto the rear axle. Having all the parts on a section of shelving and organized is something new to me, it may help get things done.

The37Kid , Nov 30, So rad, start bolting a frame together and post pics please. I love early, early cars. Hackerbilt , Nov 30, Will it get the single seater body? Mac the Yankee , Nov 30, I've got a few other bits and pieces to add to the pile. I want to have the front end done and in primer before moving on to other things.

The engine I plan to use was on an ice cutter that was in a guys basement that flooded one winter when Long Island Sound got stormey. The accessorie engine girdle was made in Mystic, Connecticut. With these salt water connections it might wind up on a beach in New Jersey some day.

Last edited: Nov 30, Noel Bullock Pikes Peak Winner. The37Kid , Dec 1, That is very high on my Top Six list. This will be great. Im sure your'll have it done before my speedster. I wanted an A, but that become a Hudson. The T will be much cooler. Sounds like a great plan. How cool! Yes I will check and make sure my cutter still has my kickup patterns on file as per your P. You are building exactly what I had in mind for a speedster all these years. The other good news is that might get yet another chance at doing one of these, as the next project in at my joint is a full chassis for a full fendered '25 tub that I'm sure will leave it's original frame behind some how This one showed up at the East-West flathead reliability run this year and then went back east and played on the sand.

There were a number of speedster style cars there and I'd bet that there are a lot of PNW flathead guys digging in their saved back stuff piles to get the basics for one after seeing them there. Last edited: Dec 1, Mr48chev , Dec 1, Pete Eastwood , Dec 1, My Avatar is a drawing of the Speedster that I plan to build. I have worked on the design for over two years and plan to make the body out of aluminum. Good luck with your project. ThomasT , Dec 1, Thanks, but how is your supply of Buffalo caps and wheels?

Bought this frame at Hershey , still has factory paint on it! Dragging out all these parts has been a lot of fun. That aluminum hogs head has a tab TIG welded to the top for use on a later style block with the two bolts that stiffen things up.

Mac the Yankee , Dec 1, You're right Mac, the frame was so good I couldn't pass up the deal, it was under priced because the back was missing 24 inches, but I just saw that as the space for the new kickups with a new 88 inch wheelbase chassis.

Here is a shot of the engine girdle, has a patent date of 9,11,17, sitting on the hogs head. It goes under the pan with the side brackets attaching to the side bolts on the pan legs. Had these Hartford shocks soaking in P B Blaster, got one link removed. These were in the collapsed chicken coop parts stash I bought about 5 years ago. They'll mount on the front crossmember. If all goes well I'll have some other parts to add to the pile tomorrow. The37Kid , Dec 8, Bob,when can I come over for a ride?
