They are also affected by habitat destruction and climate change, and their population is estimated to have decreased considerably over the past 20 years. Both of these institutions are also involved in further field research. In collaboration with the Lake Titicaca National Reserve they are continuing an in situ study for the presence of chytrid fungus along with a population and a DNA survey. It is also working with captive amphibians for reintroduction of the species if needed.
