It's important to note that for illustrative purposes, we've used images of men that are covered up. Before we get to the tips specific for naked male photography, let's quickly review some basic tips for working with nude models. Under no circumstances should you work with a model without having this documentation!
Not only is it unprofessional, but it could land you in very hot water down the road should a model sue you for using their likeness without permission. Secondly, when working with nude male models, never, ever touch them unless you have express permission from them. Just like when working with a nude female model, a nude male model is in a vulnerable position, and it's your job to make them feel comfortable and safe.
If you feel as though you need to direct the model say, to have the model in the photo above dip his left shoulder , do so by verbalizing what you'd like them to do or simply demonstrate the pose for him. If you must touch the model, they must give you permission to do so first. This can be something as simple as warming up the temperature in the studio, providing a bathrobe to wear between shots, and having water and snacks on hand in case the model needs them.
This is all just common sense practice, but these tasks can easily get lost in the excitement of preparing for the shoot. Not everyone in the world enjoys having their photo taken even with their clothes on, so you might imagine how difficult it can be to find people that are willing to have their photo taken in the buff. Finding models for nude photo shoots is not something you should try on places like Craigslist. That just opens up a big can of worms that you don't want to deal with.
Instead, it's best to use a modeling agency to find male models that are comfortable posing in the nude. By that, I mean you should be able to clearly explain to the agency the types of photos you have in mind, the purpose of the photos, the body parts you'd like to focus on, and the physical characteristics you need the model to have.
Though you might not have a finger to the pulse of the local modeling community, others in the arts world might. Additionally, it is imperative that you have references who can vouch for your professionalism as a photographer. Models want to know that you're not just some guy in his basement with a camera, so provide them with at least three former clients that can speak to your abilities behind the lens.
The model's chest and abs are on full display, giving this shot a masculine vibe. As shown above, well-placed clothing can also provide the model with some anonymity - the hood casts a shadow over his face, leaving us to wonder what he might look like. Often, in nude male photos, people tend to think of images that are risque. First, props add color, texture, shapes, and other means of visual interest to the photo. For example, in the image above, the light not only boosts contrast in the scene, which helps accentuate the model's physique, but the shape of the light also adds visual interest.
In nude male photography, it's still important to convey who the model is - it's not just a photo of his body. This man's muscular build is in part due to his love of boxing. Granted, not all nude male models have defined muscles, and that's okay. But if they do, putting them in a pose that helps you highlight their muscles can result in a beautiful shot. As shown above, this dynamic pose helps put the model's shoulder and arm muscles on full display.
Note how this image also hits on other themes we've discussed - there's anonymity since the model's face is hidden and he's also not completely nude.
Combining these tips in this way is an ideal method for creating the best-looking nude male photography. That is, you don't want the model to be moving around, per se. Instead, focus on poses like those above, in which the model is bending, stretching, and extending their body. As you can see above, having one light helps create beautiful contrast that showcases the model's body. The dynamic range of this shot is fantastic, with bright highlights and deep shadows that turn it into a fine art example of nude male photography.
Using a single-light setup is easy too - just place the light to the left or right of the model, have him turn slightly toward it so the sidelighting falls across his body, and you'll get the same kinds of highlights and shadows you see above. But it's important to experiment with other lighting, too, like the high-key lighting shown above. In this case, the abundance of light washes out the background and brightens the overall image for a completely different vibe than the previous photo.
Yet, though the lighting situation is completely different, we still get a result in which the model's form is highlighted. You need to be supportive, communicative, and sensitive to the model's needs. Instead, they'll be beautiful and tasteful representations of the male form. AE: When I first started Bare Men , the men I approached were friends who I figured would agree to pose for me and I knew we could get some great photos. Majority of the men that have answered my calls for models have been great to work with too.
When it comes to the erotic shoots, some men want me to explicitly request the erotic elements. Widewalls: While creating these images, did you have a vision of a specific photographic work, an aesthetic — or a photographer — in mind? AE: I first envisioned Bare Men as a series of individual photo stories for each man.
The way the shoots go, it could still be presented that way but I also love candid and editorial photography so many images have that aesthetic. Also whether the photo is a portrait, bodyscape, editorial, erotic, documentary I still choose images that have emotion, convey the emotion of the man and elicit an emotional response in the viewer.
It speaks to the voyeur in all of us. Widewalls: Seeing your dedicated interest in the Body Image, can you tell our readers about your other projects related to this topic and perhaps your in-progress projects at this moment?
When I shot a lot of self portraits, I received notes and emails that my work was helpful in dealing with body image, so inadvertently that art was related to that topic. Some of my writing touched on body image and the advice column I had on my blog addressed body image issues. Widewalls: Last year, your work was selected for a juried show only to be removed due to the nudity. Apparently, your nudes were too nude for a nudes art show. Can you tell us what happened? AE: I think the whole thing was ridiculous and at the time played out like Them vs.
After applying for the juried show, and having my selection of non-erotic nude photographs chosen for the show, I reached out to the curator to ask for a graphic or link I could use for promotion the date of the show had been pushed back. That was last year.
At this point the only feeling I have about the whole situation is that my time was wasted. Widewalls: After such an experience, where would you want the Bare Men series to go from here? Do you have any plans doing similar work, maybe simply continue the series? Nude Male Photography Tips
Lesson 5 of Classic Poses for Nude Male contains nudity. So now we're going to talk about some go-to, or classical, men's poses. Now the poses that you choose for your particular shoot may vary from these, because in a shoot, it's going to depend on a couple of things.
The physique of your subject, like the build of their body. The lighting that you've chosen, and it's actually an interplay in between the light, the pose, and your concept. When I'm choosing these poses, one of the reasons I've selected them is, a lot of my inspiration has come from Greek sculpture. And as I look at the Greek sculpture, one of the things you'll see over and over again, is you see structures and you see triangles.
Triangles created by the positions of the arms. So those are the types of things you want to be thinking about when you're photographing the male nude form. Alright, so for this first pose, what I'm gonna have him do, is I'm gonna have him lean out and lunge. If I just have him standing there, it's not quite as dramatic, it's that lunge that will give me that. So just standing to the side, doesn't make for an interesting pose.
So, I'm gonna give this to you first. And I'm gonna have you put your right knee up. I usually bend whatever leg is closest to the camera and that helps to center your subject. Alright, so. The first pose I'm gonna have you do, I'm gonna have you lean out a little bit, and the whole time I'm focusing on having good posture and elongation.
If he kinda hunches in to something too much, it makes the subject look a little bit weaker. So I'm trying to keep that in mind as well. So for the first shot, I'm gonna have you turn your torso towards me. And I'm gonna make triangles, or stronger lines, with the arms there. So first, can you try to lean out on your knee just little bit? And then, put this hand there. And lean your torso back towards me just a little bit. So this is going to be something that you would see over and over again in a sculpture.
I've got triangles created by his torso, and then also I've created the triangle from his knee. So let me grab this shot first for my essential pose 1.
Now one of the reasons I'm having him lean his torso towards me, is whatever is closest to the camera appears largest. So by having him lean his torso towards the camera, it'll make him look a little bit broader, a little bit wider.
It'll also have him narrow a little bit at the waist. It diminishes him. So if you look at the shoulders, he looks much narrower. In general, keep this in mind. You control the broadness or the dominance of the subject in the frame by their shoulders. So that's why I keep, generally, having him bring them back towards camera just a bit.
Same thing. And relax 'em. And bring your hands, just, this way just a little. Perfect, right there. Right there. If this is the pose that you choose, remember, varying your light, changing the angles, is gonna draw attention to different parts of the body. So that's pose number one. Alright, so for this next pose, let's do the So in this case, leg up, that lunge is going to be the same.
I'm gonna have you put your hand on your thigh. And then put that back hand out and give me some, give me a triangle. Okay so what I've done here, is I've created triangles from the lower half of his body.
Then I wanna create structure with that front arm. Instead of having it tight up to his side, I have it out a little bit to create somewhat of a right angle so it looks nice and strong. And then, if I have his back arm kind of popped out to the side, it gives me another triangle. Triangles and structure. So again, which part of the physique are you trying to show of your subject?
Alright, looks good. And, turn your shoulders that way, away from me. Good, good, good. The reason I'm doing that, is I'm creating negative space. I wanna see just a little bit of separation between his elbow and his midsection. And changing my angle just a little bit. Just put your hand straight out this way. Nope, go a little higher and pop it this way just a little.
So, it'd be my second pose. So those are two poses, and one of the things you want to notice is I used an Apple box. And the reason I've used an Apple box, is if I have him just lunge out, it's so hard for him to put his hand on his thigh, he's gonna have to lean down, and then you get into that curve instead of having a nice strong line. So by adding an Apple box, it elevates his knee so when he leans, it allows me to create nice strong triangles, right angles, instead of a curve to the back.
In this case we've used a full Apple box. Apple boxes come in different sizes. Alright, next pose. So we're gonna be faced behind, and I'm gonna have you point your left foot towards the background and your right foot towards the right. Perfect, so it's kind of a dance pose with the feet. And the reason I'm going to do this is, there's a bunch of different shapes that you typically want to create with men.
So what you'll see is from his head towards his torso and his arm, it creates a C. With men you create Cs, with women you create Ses. The other shape you can create with men is the shape of a V. So what that means is the shoulders will be broader but then it narrows towards the bottom of the body. Can you move your left foot all the way to your toe? So what it does is now, if I look, his knees meet at a narrowing point. So that's going to give me that V. Now I'm going to do the whole thing where I'm going to have you take that exact pose and just rotate to your left a little.
Right there, perfect. And now turn your shoulders towards me a tiny bit. Alright, so what it does, narrows at the lower part of his body but he's looking broader at the top of his body.
Can you put your right arm and just bend it a little bit? A little less, little less. And so I'm looking for negative space and a little bit of structure.
I want it to have a little bit of form there. So turn your shoulders back towards me a bit. I don't need to do anything with that front arm. With women, it's the rule, if you can bend it, bend it, if you can curve it, curve it.
Here, the straight line is actually kind of anchor to this shot. But again, it all depends on how you light it. And then again, you can vary different parts of the shot, expression, head placement, and so on.
So keep turning, turning, turning, perfect. Alright, my next go to shot or essential shot is going to be a seated pose. And this is something I've taken directly from a Greek statue. So I'm gonna have you sit, and I'm gonna have you put your knee that's closest to camera down, back knee up, okay? And let me lower the light. Alright, now I do want to create some structure with this so I'm going to do so with the arms.
I could have the back arm close into the body or tucked over with the other arm tucked over.
