Our smaller and cuter diaper bag isn't meant to supplant the full-size, workhorse of a diaper bag; you know the one I mean This one is perfect to grab and go for short jaunts out and about. It's still big enough, with pockets inside and outside, to hold the essentials: several diapers, wipes, a couple bottles, a special blankie or toy, even your own wallet and keys. The outside fabric is a designer cotton; the inside is the popular PUL waterproof fabric.
The finished bag is approximately 14" wide and 14" tall with a 6" x 14" bottom panel, and 6" side panels. PUL Polyurethane Laminate fabric can be a little finicky to work with, but is a great option when you want a thin, lightweight waterproof layer. It's very popular right now with folks making their own diaper covers. These same people caution against the use of pins as they poke unnecessary holes into the PUL and reduce its effectiveness as a waterproof fabric.
They suggest paper clips or basting tape. I totally get this for a diaper cover, which you really do want as leakproof as possible, but for our bag, we did use pins.
Your lining will still be plenty water-resistant to protect against splashes and small spills, as well as the wet items that inevitably get tossed in. If you experience skipped stitches on the PUL, it usually means you're using the wrong needle. Part of the fun will be finding your perfect blend. I love this pattern and have made multiple versions with some of my own little tweaks to give as gifts to friends and family. Thank you so much!! Vollesa - We're happy to hear you love our pattern.

But -- don't stress over it. Is this really needed? I appreciate any assistance you can provide. Please ignor, -- i figured it out. Stitch along the line. The reason for it is to help form the side of the bag. This vertical stitching line will form one edge of the bag's side panel - the seam front to back forms the opposite edge of the bag's 6" finished side panel.
This stitching allows the shape to hold better by creating a firmer edge. It will also give you a guide to inset the base panel. Hope that helps. Rachelle - thanks for the compliment. I made this bag for my daughter and although she loved the bag, I was disappointed that it was so big! To say that it is smaller than a typical diaper bag is incorrect. If anything, I would say that it is larger than today's diaper bags. Theresa Rodman - Sorry you were disappointed.
Our research showed this was smaller than many of the available store-bought bags. But, of course, that may be different than what you've found.
Glad to hear your daughter loved the bag anyway. This is such a fun project, I am on my third one. Here are photos of the second one I made Great job - especially love how you matched the elephant on the pocket.

Baby Gifts: Pretty Bird Quick Trip Diaper Bag | Sew4Home
Does anyone have a small-ish diaper bag that is good for just running to the store? I plan on keeping a bigger diaper bag in the car with extra diapers, outfits, etc.
Any recommendations? I just used a large purse with a few extra diapers, small container of wipes, small changing pad and diaper cream. It worked well. You can keep the diaper bag in the car so your not lugging it around as well. I got a "dry bag" for wipes, a diaper, and a small snack pack for when baby can have like cheerios that has a mesh outer pocket i can zip my wallet in to. My diaper bag has a changing pad in it. For quick trips I grab a diaper and tuck it in the pocket on the changing pad and I have a few wipes in a zip lock bag that I tuck in there too.
Sometimes I just stick a diaper and wipes in my pocket. If it's likely she may actually pee then I have to bring a elwet bag for the dirt diaper too but normally quick trips it isn't even likely I'll need to change her. For my 16 month old I have a big zippered pouch with a few diapers, a disposable changing pad, a travel pack of wipes, and bum spray from Honest.
I keep the pouch inside of a small tote that has snacks and a sippy cup. I also keep a small bag of emergency supplies in the car too. I'm planning on just keeping it in the car with some diapers and wipes in it.
I love it! I can't wait to use it!! I'm also planning to throw a few standard things ie: bandaids, Neosporin, pacifier and use it as a swap between my diaper bag and hubby's mine is too girlie for him so if we take his instead of mine, i know my basics are in that small bag!
We love that stuff! I wouldn't use it on a newborn, but it's great - especially when they start solids at 6 months and their diapers start getting extra smelly. I also get the laundry detergent and natural cleaning supplies. With my second I just bought a bigger pocketbook that I liked. Enough room to put my wallet, changing pad, diaper, travel wipe and sometimes a sippy cup or snack. And the larger bag fits quite a bit. I have another large diaper bag as well on for me and one for daddy.
The small one is going to be for quick trips or when my mother wants to take LO to the park with my older sons for an hour or two when she's old enough though lol. It's a soho 10 piece set. I like all of it but probably won't use the baby wipe thing bc baby wipes come in small packs with a sealing sticker and I like that better. I use the small square bag for accessories like headbands but when she gets old enought for baby food I think it will fit about four jars.
It comes with straps to hook the bag onto ur stroller. These can be used on other diaper bags too! This comes in lots of different colors.
I really love the Owls but I have seen so many ppl doing elephants in this group and it does have a few elephant designs. If nothing else you can get one of those small things that is a mat u lay baby on that has a pouch for like two diapers and a few wipes. And it folds up nice and small. Here is what I feel is important to have for a new baby!
