Black buffy model-Buffy is Black now - The Black Youth Project

When the news broke over the weekend announcing that Joss Whedon was not only launching a Buffy reboot , but doing so with a black female lead, my reaction was a very heavy sigh. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one of my favorite shows, in spite of many things, but not only am I not interested in a reboot, but this move to make the lead black— as reported by Deadline —is just a bad move on multiple levels for me. I just want black women to get their own stories. Sarah Michelle Gellar is Buffy. Having a black showrunner and casting a black actress will not give ownership of this series to this new incarnation.

I really think this is the ONLY way they could shield themselves from criticism and get this made. Blaxk work on projects such as Avengers: Age of Ultron and the upcoming Batgirl film also faced criticism, because the portrayals of female characters were less developed and nuanced, hunging on tired tropes of femininity and Miss usa naughty. Welcome, fellow Buffy fans! If you haven't watched through the entirety of both "Buffy" and "Angel," there will be a lot of spoilers. Read at your own risk! For as long as there have been vampires, there has been the Slayer. One girl in all the world, a Chosen One If you'd like a spoiler-free discussion mark it with the link flair. And we also ask as a courtesy to new watchers that you don't post huge spoilers in titles. Buffy can't be black.

Why not? Well, that was prior to As we watched seven seasons of BtVS, were we always thinking of the immaculate conception of Buffy as a subversion of that cliche? I doubt it. Not her skin or hair color. I understand our protectiveness towards the original show, cast and all of it, but the protectiveness towards Buffy's whiteness is far too much. BtVS had zero non-white main characters.

For a show that was ahead of its time on gender and sexuality, it seriously lacked on racial issues. I would prefer the new show to be a sequel, not a reboot, but if it's a reboot, I think that having a black Buffy is pretty awesome. Someone on Twitter nailed it: "I guess Buffy's mythology contains infinite universes, such as the world without shrimp. Let's just say this is the world with black Buffy. That might help me some. She is the blonde bimbo, the blonde valley girl, not a black girl.

That's just a bad idea. Have a new character and let them be black. Don't touch Buffy. She has always been straight. She loved Xander, she loved Oz, she can't be gay. That's just bad writing. Have a new character and let them be gay. Don't touch Willow. Personal take on this: I am a huge stickler on lore. Why not build on it instead of replacing it?

Hell they had Kendra in the original series, even if they recast they could do her story that we didnt see on Buffy. I just think it's a bad idea to recast Buffy herself with anyone other than SMG, regardless of ethnicity. If Nicky is right in w hat he's hearing and he's a lousy source, I a dmit that's exactly what it will be. Just make it about a new Slayer and none of this matters.

The trend of taking beloved, iconic characters and replacing them with diversity characters, without regard for the fan base. It's another matter entirely to rewrite or replace them like with Thor who is now female and presumptively with Buffy who is now black.

That presupposes that the show or comic book heroes etc, belong to only one culture "white culture" which isn't even a cohesive thing already, which they do not. With respect, we just disagree on too much. Thank you, nevertheless, for your thoughtful response.

One thing we can both agree on is our love for the original series and our hope that the new series isn't a big ole pile of poop.

It's not that she can't be Black, it's why would you want her to be a retread of an established character? She should be her own character set in the same universe, otherwise she'd constantly be compared to Sarah Michelle Gellar's version of Buffy. I think that's what the majority would prefer. Honestly, this is like the last thing that we should be considering a problem with a Buffy reboot.

If anything, it's a glimmer of hope that they at least won't try to copy the original cast note for note and cast a teenage SMG lookalike. With that said, everything about a reboot is a terrible idea and should be immediately thrown away. We don't need a redo of a story and cast that was pretty much nailed the first time around. There's no replacing the original main cast, they're too tied to their characters to be replaced 20 years later.

I mean, come on, who could possibly do Willow's upbeat, quirky personality on any sort of level close to Aly? Please, please be a continuation and not a straight up reboot. The question is beside the point. Buffy's story was masterfully told - it is done. A remake will only serve to turn a subversive story into a pandering one.

It's not that Buffy can't be black, but why should she? Why should there be a new Buffy at all? Why does an established story have to be remade?

I would love for her to become a great hit with the audience, a role model, a leader, distinct and funny and strong. Hell yeah. Buffy already exists. It would be so difficult to watch this new show, amazing as it might become, and pretend that I'm not thinking about the "real" Scooby Gang. If they're gonna do this, let them do it right. And if they're gonna do it right, then let this new show exist in its own right.

Like it sucks but realistically, a black Buffy would have a different life experience than a white Buffy. I don't think it's as simple as just changing her skin tone and keeping the rest of her character exactly the same. In the original run Buffy is a girl, and it's addressed. She deals with sexism, people not taking her seriously, because she's a little blonde valley girl.

If Buffy's black I think it's important that racism gets addressed, and is part of her character. Like racism still exists in society and realistically that's something she'd have to deal with sometimes.

Just like it would have been kind of unrealistic if original Buffy never experienced sexism. And it adds a new dimension to the character and like. If we're making changes and adding new layers, why not just have an original character? I'm just worried that it'll be kind of tone deaf if they just make her black without any consideration to how that would effect her character.

JW has said before that he has looked back and learned that he was not aware of poc representation in casting in his earlier shows and he wants to be better about that, so i hope he is focusing on this with this show and the nevers. This is completely different. It's not about making Buffy black, it's about completely overwriting her character.

A reboot would cancel out the entire Buffyverse and create a new one. People don't want that, especially when there is so much potential for a show with a black lead in the existing universe.

While it's true that Buffy had few non-white characters, it's not true there were zero. To me Whedon's best work still is Buffy and I'd love to see him try again with updated themes and new characters. I agree with some of what you're saying but OP did say MAIN characters that are non-white, which is true, there isn't any. Only Angel had a non-white main character, reoccurring season 1, main season And, let's be honest, Gunn wasn't much of a character.

Charisma Carpenter is a woman of colour though. I didn't realise that she was, tbh. I thought she was European Spanish, which is white. Didn't know she was Latino until I just looked it up. I would love a show based on a non-white slayer What would be amazing: continue the series twenty years after it left off.

Buffy, Dawn, Willow, Xander, Giles, Andrew, etc all return to show where they are after all these years. While Buffy has been training younger and potential slayers over the years A new evil makes itself known This new girl and her eventual group of friends will each be given the torch to protect the world.

Keeping the original cast to draw in the hordes of old fans, and allowing new fans to be introduced to them as well as an awesome new group of teenage heroes.

To me, Buffy only can't be black in the sense that Sarah Michelle Gellar isn't black, and hers is the definitive performance of the role. And I'm not interested in seeing someone else's take. White, black, hispanic, Asian, whatever. By all means, make a show in the same universe. Make a show about another slayer, if there are interesting stories to still be told there and I think there are.
