Anwar Ghazali, who was working at the store at the time of the shooting, was arrested after a neighbor found Harris' body in a backyard near the store. Ghazali was convicted Thursday of second-degree murder following a four-day trial, the district attorney's office announced. Prosecutors said Harris had entered the store around 10 p. Ghazali, armed with a gun, "ran after Harris for a short distance" before firing several shots at the teen, the press release states. As Ghazali walked back to the store and told a witness, "I think I shot him," according to the press release and affidavit.

Ghazali never called the police, the district attorney's office said. Harris' body was discovered two days after the shooting. He had a gunshot wound in the back of his left thigh, according to the district attorney's office. Ghazali was arrested two days later and admitted to investigators that he fired several shots at the teen, the affidavit states.

He was initially booked in jail on a first-degree murder charge. According to NBC affiliate WMC 5 in Memphis, a woman who had been at the store the night of the murder testified during the trial that she saw Harris grab two "coolers" but dropped one as he left. Beverly Loverson said Ghazali then ran out of the store armed with a gun. Don't kill him. It's just a beer,'" she testified. When Ghazali came back in the store, Loverson said she heard him say that he thinks he shot the teen.

Not over a dollar beer,'" she said. Loverson also did not call the police. She said during the trial that she wishes she had called the police because it could have saved Harris' life, WMC 5 reported. When asked for a comment on Thursday's verdict, Ghazali's attorney, Blake Ballin, told NBC News in a statement that they tried to "make sure that the jury rendered a verdict based on the facts of the case and not on the color of someone's skin.

Victorian teen guilty of murdering Laa Chol | SBS News

When police asked a year-old north shore boy why he broke into the home of a pregnant neighbour and repeatedly stabbed her, his response was chilling. Pei-Jiun Cheah, right. Credit: Facebook. The details of the boy's "random" attack on Pei-Jiun Cheah can be revealed after the teen pleaded guilty to specially aggravated break and enter, committing a serious indictable offence under circumstances of aggravation and wounding with intent of grievous bodily harm.

Ms Cheah, a physiotherapist, was 20 weeks pregnant when she arrived at her Mount Colah home on July 26 last year, heating up a frozen pie for dinner and doing her washing before going upstairs to the bedroom she shared with her husband. Unbeknown to her, her year-old neighbour had come in via the side gate, just metres from his home, and accessed the house by removing the sliding door at the back.

Armed with a serrated steak knife he had taken from his home, the St Ives High School student took her phone and wallet outside, leaving them under a tree metres from the house.

The teen, whom Ms Cheah described in court documents seen by the Herald , as "young, skinny, covered up with a dark hoodie", returned and confronted Ms Cheah inside her bedroom where she was listening to music and checking emails. Still armed with the knife, he leapt at the bed she was lying on and began striking her face and body.

Court documents say she initially believed the teen was punching her, until she saw the brown-handled knife he was brandishing. As she struggled, the teenager shoved her against the dressing table and fled as Ms Cheah managed to prise the knife from him.

Ms Cheah ran out outside seeking help and collapsed at her neighbour's front door still clutching the weapon. As emergency personnel converged on the quiet cul-de-sac, the teenager's father approached police to tell investigators his son had just arrived home covered in blood with wounds on his hands, claiming to have had a scooter accident.

Police then found forensic evidence linking him to the crime, including bloody clothes, fingerprints and a single Nike sneaker - the twin of which was found in the boy's room. Ms Cheah was taken to Royal North Shore for emergency treatment, while the boy was taken there with nine stab wounds, then transferred to Hornsby Hospital where he spoke to police. Asked why he attacked Ms Cheah, who had moved into the neighbourhood with her husband just weeks before, the teen said he didn't have a reason for choosing that property.

Following the attack, Ms Cheah's family released a statement confirming she and her unborn child were in a stable condition. The Sydney Morning Herald. License this article. Crime Courts Police. Sally Rawsthorne Twitter Email.
